Life can be tough sometimes. While there are a lot of wonderful things in life, there are plenty of negative aspects as well. This is made worse by the profusion of disheartening things that are spread so easily via TV and the internet. These things can feel like a weight on your shoulders and leave a negative imprint on you. How can we find good in these situations and be positive in the midst of all this? That’s what this post is for.
1) TRY FINDING THE GOOD IN ANY BAD OR DIFFICULT SITUATION:
I believe there is good in everything, no matter how bad it may seem. This is much easier said than done, but it can make a world of difference in a given situation. Try assessing the situation or experience and ask ‘what is good about this?’ Is there something that could have gone wrong but didn’t? Did anything good happen as a result? (even if it’s small) Can anything good be brought out of it? Will it eventually spawn something positive? Doing this can help me feel better about things that go bad.
2) CAN ANYTHING BE LEARNED FROM THIS?
Problems and troubles can be a great teacher. What can be learned from the situation? Can a mistake be avoided in the future? Can it teach strength, courage, endurance or the like? Everything can be turned into a learning experience.
3)TRY TO REMEMBER THAT THIS DIFFICULTY WILL PASS:
This is the hardest for me personally. But it’s important to try to remember that things will get better. There was a time when the trouble wasn’t there, right? Then that time will come again.
4) TAKE A BREAK FROM THE NEGATIVITY:
It’s very hard, if not imposible to completely eradicate the negativity from life. When bad things seem overwhelming, try taking regular, scheduled breaks from them. Purposefully seek out time during the week or day to focus on something that is happy, upbeat and that you enjoy. Or try finding a space where you can just chill and de-stress and breath for awhile. Focus on thinking about something other than the stress. This can also apply to social media and news. Both can present a lot of negativity sometimes, but taking scheduled breaks can help improve mood. I actually refrain from getting on social media or looking at news outlets every day. About two or three times per week, I don’t even look at them. It has really made an impact.
5)START YOUR DAY WITH POSITIVITY:
Why begin the day thinking about stress? I like to take about 15 minuets first thing in the morning to pray. This helps me focus on God instead of my trouble. It also centers me and gives me peace and strength for the day. I always feel better on days I do this.
6) PURPOSEFULLY EXPOSE YOURSELF TO POSITIVE THINGS:
This kind of aligns with number 4. While I like to take scheduled breaks I also like to make a point to expose myself to positive things throughout the week as well. I seek out encouraging or uplifting things. This one’s kind of fun because you get to take time to add joy into life! I like to take some time to listen to positive music, spend time with people I love being with or watching a funny show or movie. Think of what makes you feel good and make sure to fit that into the week.
7) LISTEN TO MUSIC OR ALLOW PERIODS OF SILENCE:
I love to do both, actually. I like to just jamming out in my car on my way to work or driving around town when I run errands. It helps me relax. Silence has the same effect. I have a 45 minuet drive to work and that time that I sometimes use for music can also be used for silence. Surrounding myself with quiet can help de-stress, too. Psychological studies have also confirmed the benefits of taking periods of silence suggesting they help ease stress and assist in the formation of memories.
8) DON’T FORGET THAT THERE IS GOOD IN LIFE!:
No matter how bad things seem, there are always good things in the world and in our lives. Try taking a few minuets each week to reflect on what’s good in life. They don’t have to be big things, just anything you felt good about. For example, maybe a friend called, or there was something really funny on your favorite TV show, or someone did something really nice. Thinking about the good things helps distracts from the negative and reminds us that life still has good.
So if things are tough right now, hang in there and remember that there is still light, even in darkness!
